The Bronx Veterans Medical Research Foundation, Inc. (BVMRF) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization incorporated in the state of New York. It meets all federal and state reporting requirements. BVMRF is affiliated with the James J. Peters VA Medical Center and the VA Hudson Valley Health Care System, but is a legally separate entity that submits annual reports to the Department of Veterans Affairs and to the U.S. Congress.

The Nonprofit Program Office (NPPO) is a VHA program office that operates as a liaison between the Veterans Health Administration and nonprofit corporations (NPCs) such as the BVMRF. The NPPO is responsible for coordinating policy regarding NPCs and provides oversight, guidance and education to ensure compliance with applicable regulations and VA policies affecting the operation and financial management of NPCs. This includes responsibility for performing on- and off-site reviews, substantive reviews of annual reports submitted by each NPC, and for compiling such annual report data for VA’s required annual report to Congress. Additionally, the NPPO institutes measures to ensure that any deficiencies in the operation and management of an NPC are corrected in an appropriate and timely manner.

BVMRF is dedicated to the continuous exploration of process improvements aimed at optimizing resource allocation for research and educational initiatives that support Veterans’ Health. Based on this commitment to cost-effective management structures, BVMRF’s administrative operating expenses represent approximately 13% of the total research program costs. As of 2023, BVMRF employs 50 staff including Research Scientists, Clinical Research Nurses, Clinical Research Coordinators, Regulatory Coordinators, Laboratory Technicians, and Research Assistants.
