Celebrating Excellence in Research - 2024

On October 24, 2024, the Bronx Veterans Medical Research Foundation (BVMRF) joined the James J. Peters VA Medical Center (JJP VAMC) to celebrate the annual Excellence in Research event showcasing innovative research initiatives that are advancing healthcare for Veterans through collaboration with VISN 2 and its esteemed academic partners and affiliates. Attendees had the opportunity to hear about groundbreaking research from leaders across multiple VA facilities, including work on cancer health equity, traumatic brain injuries, and advancements in podiatry and nerve regeneration. The event also featured testimonials from Veterans on how VA research has impacted their lives.

In the afternoon, five of BVMRF’s distinguished Principal Investigators and leaders in their respective fields shared advancements in Oncology, Gastroenterology, Spinal Cord Injury, and Rheumatology, representing the outstanding collaborative efforts between the James J. Peters VA Medical Center and the Bronx Veterans Medical Research Foundation (BVMRF).These scientific sessions featured topics including:

Dr. Anna Park, M.D. (Oncology Service)

Title: “A Phase III, Randomized, Double-blind, Placebo-controlled Study Evaluating Atezolizumab and Bevacizumab, with or without Tiragolumab, in Patients with Untreated Locally Advanced or Metastatic Hepatocellular Carcinoma.”

Dr. Kristel Hunt, M.D. (Gastrointestinal Service)

Title: “Introducing Palliative Care (PC) within the Treatment of End Stage Liver Disease (ESLD): A Cluster Randomized Controlled Trial”

Dr. Marinella Galea, M.D. (Spinal Cord Injury Service)

Title: “An Innovative Wound Management Solution for Reducing Dressing Changes and Burden of Care in the Treatment of Pressure Injuries”

Dr. Kelly Steed, M.D. (Rheumatology Service)

Title: “A Randomized, Double-blind, Parallel Group, Placebo-controlled, Multicenter Phase 3 Trial to Evaluate the Efficacy, Safety and Tolerability of Ianulumab on Top Standard-of-care Therapy in Participants with Active Lupus Nephritis (SIRIUSLN)”

Dr. Tae-Hoon Lee, M.D. (Gastrointestinal Service)

Title: “A Randomized, Double-Blind, Placebo-Controlled, Multicenter Study to Assess the Efficacy and Safety of Rifaximin Soluble Solid Dispersion (SSD) Tablets for the delay of Encephalopathy Decompensation in Cirrhosis (RED-C)”
